It lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the “Intracoastal,” a waterway that separates Palm Beach from the cities of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth. The year-round population is 10,000 grows to 30,000 during the winter. Palm Beach benefits from its proximity to the Gulf Stream which produces lush gardens, palm lined beaches, an outstanding marine environment, and temperate weather. In Palm Beach, the combination of fine stunning architecture, exceptional natural beauty, cosmopolitan culture, and unique amenities, attracts an involved citizenry committed to civic and philanthropic causes.Palm Beach was built on the vision of Henry M. Flagler, millionaire industrialist and owner of the Florida East Coast Railway. Born in 1830, Flagler made his fortune as one of the founding partners of the Standard Oil Company. He came first to St. Augustine during the 1880s, and built the Hotel Ponce de Leon and the Hotel Alcazar. Then, Flagler built or purchased railroads to bring visitors to the hotels. In 1892, he obtained a Florida State charter to extend his rail lines to Miami and in 1895 he established the Florida East Coast Railroad. Reaching Ft. Pierce in 1894, Flagler’s railroad extended to Lake Worth and Palm Beach. Flagler’s promotion of Palm Beach transformed the island into a winter destination for America’s elite. Flagler built the Hotel Royal Poinciana and the Palm Beach Inn, which became the Breakers. Flagler’s railroad eventually reached Key West in 1912. His agents began assembling parcels of land in Palm Beach and in 1911, once the town was incorporated, Flagler began development of the island. In 1929, the Garden Club of Palm Beach joined the Town, and the two prepared a Town Plan that remains in place today. Palm Beach amenities include the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, which sponsors significant cultural programs and world-renowned artists, and PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, one of America’s premier golf courses. The Town of Palm Beach long-range planning focuses on quality of life issues that include protecting open spaces, managing residential and commercial redevelopment, maintaining the island's beaches and improving storm drainage and emergency management measures. Palm Beach is the only town in Florida to have created and implemented a feral cat management program that successfully reduced feral cat populations by capturing, neutering, releasing and relocating them. The program is a model of humane wildlife management. Palm Beach Real Estate Market Snapshot
