In 1856 Orlando became the county seat of Orange County, Florida. The Town of Orlando was incorporated in 1875 with an area of 4 square miles. Orlando incorporated as a city in 1885.

Today, the City of Orlando, by annexation, has an area of over 100 square miles and is located entirely within Orange County.

Orlando is the center for economic growth and development in central Florida, and is likely to occupy that role for years to come. Orlando boasts an economy with many legs. Orlando and Orange County are probably best known for hosting the Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando theme parks, but less known, and more impressive, is the county’s manufacturing base. Northrup Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and other defense contractors make their products here, along with producers of food and beverages, construction materials, medical supplies, telephone equipment, electronics, software, motors, generators, and special-use motor vehicles. Orlando and its neighboring cities are home to a number of high-volume call centers, warehousing and distribution centers, hotel and resort operators, and insurance, real estate, mortgage and financial service companies.

Orlando has been cited as one of the top 10 American cities for salary growth. Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida notched a 5.2 percent average salary increase in the health-care industry, and some say “the downturn won't hit this area very hard.” Further. the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and a new medical school at the University of Central Florida are expected to attract other emerging businesses to the area.
