Coral Gables takes pride in the preservation of its architecture and landmarks, calling itself the City Beautiful, after George Merrick’s inspired planned community patterned after the Garden City and City Beautiful movements of the 19th century.  The city was created in 1925, blending secluded residential neighborhoods with commercial areas by adopting a consistent Mediterranean architecture.  Merrick’s planned city offered many amenities aimed at the comfort and convenience of its residents while attracting the international businesses that would eventually locate here.

Keeping true to this vision, Coral Gables continues to protect residential areas and its natural environment, while maintaining its international flavor.

In addition, Coral Gables was one of the first Florida cities to create a Historical Resources Board and establish procedures for local landmark protection. Since then, historic preservation has been a mission of the Coral Gables — both in terms of architectural treasures saved and historic events and figures honored.  Coral Gables is home to The Biltmore Hotel, one of only three National Landmarks in Miami-Dade County, and to nine properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including Merrick House and Coral Gables City Hall.
