For some, it's about jobs.  Florida's diverse economy generates jobs in tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, construction, international trade, and financial services.   The state is a leading producer of navigational instruments, medical equipment, beverages, and broadcasting equipment.   

For some, it's about the leisure of Florida living... its spectacular beaches,  its golf courses ...  its equestrian trails (yes, we've got miles of them) and tropical gardens ... its professional sports and college sports ... go, Gators ... and, of course, spring training ... and cruising and boating and deep sea fishing and amusement parks and museums and many other entertainments.

It's about Florida's great houses. beautifully landscaped, built for comfort in the semi-tropics.  Single family split levels, townhouses, hi-rise beachfront condos, Italianate villas, great estates ... Florida has it all ... and, especially today, with house values declining, at great values.

Living in Florida, and buying and owning a home in Florida, has its advantages and disadvantages. 

One huge advantage: the state does not impose income tax. 

Another advantage: the chart showing  changes in the value of Florida owner occupied houses and condos shows the market peaked at the end of 2007.   Today's median home price is substantially less than at September 2008.  

But, Florida's revenues come largely from property taxes that are set and collected locally, and sales taxes.  Before you buy a house or condo, learn about your area's property taxes.

Home insurance presents another challenge.  Try understanding how that works.  Can you get coverage?  What kind of coverage do you need?  Does the coverage and price include wind and flood?  These, too, are important cost factors.
